Physical Activity

According to the World Health Organisation, children need 60 minutes of play with moderate to
vigorous activity every day. We here at Scoil Róis actively promote
inclusive physical activity throughout the school day.

Active School Walkway

We have erected our signs for the Active School Walkway and it will be officially launched during our Active Week. Every class will be introduced to the walkway this week and complete at least one of the Active Flag walkway worksheets. Classes will be encouraged to use the walkway for maths, geography, spelling, mindfulness and exercise.

Run Around Ireland Challenge

We really enjoyed taking part in the Run Around Ireland Challenge. This is another Active School challenge which runs nationally for four weeks. Each class ran laps of the yard. Each lap equates to 1km. We clock our kms and we visit different Irish landmarks all over the country. The children really enjoyed the exercise and learnt all about different tourist attractions in Ireland. Each class received a certificate on completion. It was a great success.

Cross Curricular Activities

We recognize the importance of linking physical activity into other curricular areas.
Maths Trails, Nature Walks and Beach Trips all link with the Outdoor and Adventure Strand
of the PE curriculum.

Active Playground Breaks

We have two playground breaks for all classes throughout the day. Children are encouraged to play with balls, hula hoops and skipping ropes.

Active Breaks Every Day Challenge

We are endeavouring to have an active break every day in the month of June. Each class will take part in 10@10 (RTE Junior) or Go Noodle activities. Pupils can challenge the class and teacher and vice versa.

Table Tennis Take Over Days

All classes really enjoyed taking part in our ‘Table Tennis Take Over Days’ on May 31st and June 1st . It was a sport that some children hadn’t played before and they enjoyed the challenge. The smiles say it all!

Active Homework

Active Homework is assigned once a week on the day the children have PE. For Active School Week, written homework will be replaced by active homework.

Scoil Róis Soccer World Cup

The annual World Cup Tournament is currently underway. 130 girls and boys chose to take
part this year. Our fantastic Active School Committee worked together to divide the teams
into 4 groups. Group matches, quarter finals, semi finals and finals have all been scheduled.
Two matches take place each day on the Astro Pitch. The Active School Committee are
wonderful referees.

Mini-Olympic Handball

Scoil Róis have a strong tradition of competing in Olympic Handball Competitions. Both the boys and girls teams qualified for the county finals. The boys were narrowly defeated but the girls went on to play in the Connacht Finals and the All Ireland Finals in Co. Meath. They
were narrowly beaten in the final. It was a wonderful experience for all involved.

FAI Primary Schools 5s

Our girls and boys represented us well in the recent FAI Primary Schools 5s recently. Our

Paws - Water Safety Programme

We are so lucky to live beside the sea in Galway and it is especially important for our pupils
to be aware of the potential dangers around water and how to stay safe.
David and Ciara from Water Safety Ireland visited our school and taught every class about
being safe around water. Every child learnt how to throw a life buoy ring.

Swimming

Picture
Children from 4th class look forward to their swimming lessons in Leisureland , Salthill every
year. This year’s lessons began after Easter and will continue for 10 weeks. The brisk walk to
and from the pool is great for increasing those steps!!

Céilí Mór

To celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge and St. Patrick's Day each class took part in a Ceilí Mór. Our senior pupils took on the role of Dance Leaders.

City Sports

Children represent Scoil Róis every year in the annual City Sports in Dangan. Children participate in sprints, long distance and relay races.
